The Wire on fashion

Bunk: [on detail] A different look for our boy.
McNulty: Yeah, Perry Ellis, or something.
Bunk: Now, how would a just-rolled-out-of-bed-looking motherfucker like you know the designer?
McNulty: [pauses] Okay, I’m guessing.
Bunk: It’s a Joseph Abboud. He puts dark buttons instead of brass on his blazers. That’s the Abboud signature.
McNulty: You know what they call a guy who pays that much attention to his clothes, don’t you?
Bunk: A grown-up.

Perhaps it’s the sweater-tie combo I’m rocking today. More likely it’s that we just watched this episode last night and it cracked me up. Anyway, Bunk’s right.

In the spirit of keeping this blog from degenerating into a total pastefest… I’m going to try my hand at a little letterpress design with Maggie tomorrow. I have some ideas for some cards aimed at designers. A thank you card with lorem ipsum, or something super nerdy like that, I’m still kicking around a few ideas. After that, we’re off to the legendary (and final!) Bushwick birthday party where I will no doubt, as Bunk would say, have a taste.

Have a great weekend.

For the first episode, we gathered in the Harlem apartment of Shine, a 43-year-old half Dominican, half African-American man who managed a gang for fifteen years before heading to prison for a ten-year drug trafficking sentence. I invited older guys like Shine, most of whom had retired from the drug trade, because they would have greater experience with rogue cops, political toughs, and everyone else that makes The Wire so appealing. They affectionately named our gathering “Thugs and ‘Cuz.” (I was told that the “‘cuz” — short for “cousin” — was for me.)

She is frequently portrayed endorsing Barack Obama and she apparently dislikes Hillary Clinton. Despite her vocal support of Obama that there is an “eighty percent chance” that she will end up secretly voting for John McCain in the 2008 election.

CNN identifies spoilage

Monday, June 11th, 2007 | 3 Comments »

From CNN’s Sopranos recap:

CNN is (not) a lot of things but it is definitely not a spoiler, which is much more than I can say for either the New Yorker or the New York Times (spoilers in both places). The New Yorker article spoiled one specific piece of the last season for me; had I not caught up by last weekend, the Times would have spoiled everything preceding last night’s final episode. (I thought the finale was exceptionally good, even by Sopranos standards. Also, I’d like to offer up a new verb for the lexicon: to be Leotardoed.)

Anyway, to get back to the point, the spoiler alert shows that CNN has its finger on the pulse of its readership. After all, it’s not like anyone is going to CNN to read the news. As for the cognitive style of the “Story Highlights,” I’ll save that for another day. Although the points are factually correct: the earth did not shake after last night’s Sopranos.
