Gambling on amateur sports: Do it for your sister (2006 version)
Monday, March 13th, 2006Be sure to check out the award-winning picks from last year. I’ll post another update later this week with my full, for-profit bracket picks, once it’s clear whether Villanova guard Allan Ray has one eyeball or two. For now, here are your bona fide, can’t miss, 110% upset specials, sponsored by Billy Packer’s Bile & Colostomy™, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Nantz Classy Professional Interview Service©.

(9) Wisconsin over (8) Arizona. Bo Ryan out-scowls Lute Olson.

(11) Wisconsin-Milwaukee over (6) Oklahoma. No comment, I don’t care about either team.

(10) Northern Iowa over (7) Georgetown. 319 reprazent.
Tempting, but I’ll pass: (14) Xavier over (3) Gonzaga and (15) Winthrop over (2) Tennessee. Is it just me or does this look like the first year ever that all 5 seeds could advance in the first round? Those 5-12 matchups look pretty weak.

I actually have no problems with your upsets. I do think the Oakland bracket has a number of “Teams of the Weak” in it. As for the 5-12 matchups, I agree that the 12 seeds look pretty weak, however here is a possibility for each:
A&M over Cuse – This could happen just because the Cuse used up all of their luck in the Big East tourney and they are not as good as a 5 seed.
Kent St. over Pitt – Pitt has been playing better than they actually are all season and Kent St. has done it before.
Utah St. over Washington – Washington played in the Pac 10, which was just barely better than any other conference this year, so they have not been challenged. Throw them against a team that everyone says shouldn’t be there and you could have an upset
Nevada vs. Montana – Nevada is a bunch of people’s dark horse, which means they will have to be upset early. No knows anything about Montana so the stars might align here.
All of that being said, I don’t think any will happen for the first time in a number of years.

Yeah, the Cuse is the only one I see potentially getting upset. And I don’t think that will happen because they got bounced in the first round last year after making a great run in the Big East. Once bitten, twice shy, or something like that.

Embarassed to admit this, but the old Purple and Gold didn’t even get my pick. The Salukis are the MVC team to watch, knocking off both WVU and the Chokeyes.
I am, however, on board with your other two upset picks. Look for Seton Hall and CAL to make noise. And for you Michigonians, State makes the Elite 8. Also, all the No. 2 seeds blow choad with the notable exception OSU.

thanks for thinking of me. i am entering a rather large pool this year (last year’s flow? 750$). i would appreciate all of the help i can get from all of your faithful users. unless you’re going to make me lose 10 fucking dollars. in that case, keep it in your pants.

Bot.
You need to set up an online pool and invite me. I need something to waste time on next week when my wife starts working in the same office as me. I set one up last year, its your turn, step up.
