Cause I’m back… yes I’m back in #5F5F80, yow!
Thursday, November 18th, 2004You’re seeing a new page because there’s a new stylesheet and page layout. However, unless MovableType suddenly discovers that no! users don’t actually want to simultaneously use eighteen templates for one blog (I wish I were making that number up), it’s not likely that there will be any future design updates. At least not with this blogging software. There’s no more customizable and powerful publisher than MT, but right now it takes literally hours to update the look of this page, a task that should be relatively simple. That’s my $.03 of UI advice for the good folks at MT. Using the immortal words of Charlie, I say to Movable Type: take me to bed or lose me forever.
del.icio.us — and that crazy thing called social software — is the new black among academic types. Don’t let the jargon or the .us domain deter you: del.icio.us is awesome. Basically the deal is that it’s a souped-up bookmarks manager. Except that you share your bookmarks with everyone. And the sharing is very extensible. As a result of some hacking around, you now get to see my ten most recently added del.icio.us bookmarks on the left side of the screen. Allow me to take a minute to point out a couple must-sees:
Now I know what you’re thinking. You’re thinking this is a substitute for content. Well you’re damn right it is. In fact, I think it’s rather clever. While visitors’ expectations for new content continue to fall dramatically, this new content featurette should actually drive traffic up as lonely surfers hit refresh constantly in search of the internet’s next gold vein.
I’m tired.

I contend your comment about MT being the most customizable and powerful publisher. WordPress has nearly as many plugins as MT now and is built upon PHP/MySQL so you do not have to refresh the entire site to make one little change to your CSS. Also, WordPress has a wonderful support wiki which blows away anything that MT has for support. Finally, there is an import feature that worked flawlessly from MT to WP, so there is no good excuse not to switch.

A second comment, this one about del.icio.us. Does their service work like an RSS thing where you get notified of an update on the site or is it just a place to keep bookmarks. I have an account on there but havn’t used it much because I didn’t see the advantage to it over something like Bloglines that handles RSS feeds.

The more I futz around with this thing, the more tempting it is to dump the MT database and start from scratch.
Stay tuned.

Dude, I’m am completely jealous of you having The Blind Pig, I mean: “Bands such as REM, 10,000 Maniacs, Sonic Youth, Soul Asylum and The Rollins Band played there early in their careers, well before they hit the big time.”
and
” Among these were Soundgarden, The Screaming Trees, The Smashing Pumpkins, Pearl Jam and a scraggly little band of upstarts called Nirvana.
It was Nirvana, years after they played there, who gave the Pig their most flattering moment in the limelight when they, on a televised MTV interview, cited the club as their number one venue of choice anywhere, ever.”
and most importantly
“Guinness was the only beer on tap and several varieties of French wine were available, as were premium brands scotch, Irish whiskey and other liquors.”
So I guess I know where you will be on Thursday Dec. 9th.
